Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal skin infection that usually starts between the toes and causes itching, redness, stinging, peeling and sometimes cracking or blistering. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with sport — it affects anyone whose feet spend long hours in warm, sweaty, enclosed footwear, which describes most office workers, students, factory staff and labourers across Pakistan for much of the year.
Why it's so common here
Pakistan's hot season and humid monsoon months create ideal fungal growing conditions inside closed shoes. Communal spaces such as mosque wudu areas, public showers and shared prayer mats, combined with the habit of walking barefoot in these environments, make it easy to pick up and pass on the fungus.
Symptoms to recognise early
Itching and burning, especially between the fourth and fifth toes; dry, flaking or peeling skin; redness; small blisters; and in more advanced cases, cracked, raw skin that can become a doorway for bacterial infection.
Our treatment
We assess the skin, recommend or apply appropriate antifungal treatment, and importantly address footwear and hygiene habits, since treating the infection without changing the underlying moist environment usually leads to it returning within weeks. For patients with recurrent athlete's foot, we also check whether the infection has begun to spread into the toenails, which needs separate, longer-term treatment.
Prevention
Dry between your toes thoroughly after wudu, bathing or sweating. Wear cotton socks and change them daily, more often if your feet sweat heavily. Rotate footwear so shoes fully dry between wears. Avoid walking barefoot on shared wet surfaces.
